Brussels, November 13th 2013 - A broad support from the European audiovisual industry for Standard Identifiers and ISAN - Improving identification and discoverability of audio-visual content online: a declaration by the audio-visual industry.
"Ten pledges to bring more content online" were outlined during the final meeting of the "Licences for Europe" stakeholder dialogue organized by the European Commission from February to November 2013. Pledge number 9 is an important declaration by the audio-visual industry that represents, for the first time, broad support for international, standard audio-visual work identifiers from across a wide spectrum of actors in the European sector. Making current standards interoperable and using them widely will help to take audio-visual works out of the digital 'black hole' and streamline their distribution and discoverability.
" the Declaration on the audiovisual identifiers, is a necessary step to foster access to more audio-visual heritage online" said Androulla VASSILIOU (Member of the EC in charge of Education, Culture, Multilingualism and Youth) in her speech on the License for Europe final plenary session.
Signatories of the declarion are: Société civile pour l'Administration des Droits des Artistes et Musiciens Interprètes (Adami), British Film Institute (BFI), European Coordination of Independent producers (CEPI), International Confederation of Societies of Authors and Composers (CISAC), European Association of Regional Film Funds (CineRegio), Entertainment Identifier Registry (EIDR), European Organisation of Movie and Television Producers’ Collecting Societies (Eurocinema), European Organisation of Movie and Television Producers’ Collecting Societies in charge of private copy EuroCopya), European Film Promotion (EFP), Federation of European Film Directors (FERA), International Federation of Film Producers Associations (FIAPF), Institut National de l'Audiovisuel (INA), ISAN International Agency (ISAN-IA), Society of Audiovisual Authors (SAA).
Other organizations have already expressed their intention to join to the declaration.

Geneva, March 2013 - ISAN Portugal is the new appointed ISAN Registration Agency for serving the Portuguese territory. ISAN Portugal has been co-founded by GEDIPE (Associação para a Gestão de Direitos de Autor, Produtores e Editores), the Portuguese Association for Collective Management of Authors, Producers and Editors and GDA (Gestão dos Direitos dos Artistas, Intérpretes ou Executantes), the Artists and Performers collecting society. Since 1998, GEDIPE represents the cinematographic, videographic producers, as well as the TV Independent Producers. GDA has been created in 1995 for the collective management of neighboring rights for Artists.

Entertainment ID Registry (EIDR) and the International Standard Audiovisual Number International Agency (ISAN-IA) have embarked on efforts to support seamless registration of content IDs in either system to enable content producers and distributors to take full advantage of the capabilities of both systems. Madrid, December 11th 2012 – Birth of the first online public audiovisual rights registry. ISAN has been chosen to identify audiovisual content in the new online registry for audiovisual works and recordings, created jointly by the Spanish “Audiovisual Producers’ Rights Management Association" (EGEDA), Safe Creative, and the College of Spanish Registrars (Ilustre Colegio de Registradores de España). This innovative registry enables rights-holders to register their works quickly and easily online. The initiative aims to give legitimate rights-holders greater security in a context of proliferation of exploitation windows. At the same time, it provides users a transparent and direct manner to interact with the rights-holders. In particular, ISAN will be required by the Spanish Personal Property Registry (Registro de Bienes Muebles) for audiovisual works and recordings.

Geneva, December 2011 – ARIBSAN, supports the metadata seminar at the Filmoteca del IVAC, Valencia, Spain from December 14th to 16th 2011.
Aribsan, the Iberico-American ISAN Registration Agency is collaborating to the organization of the 5th workshop for the use and implementation of the European Standards EN 15744 and EN 15907 on the Interoperability of Film databases. This event, scheduled from December 14th to 16th 2011 in Valencia, Spain, is organized and hosted by IVAC the Valencia Audiovisual and Cinematographic Institute with the collaboration of the CEN/TC372, Deutsches Filminstitut, ARIBSAN and the Filmoteca Española. This seminar is the continuation of a first series of dissemination events granted by the European Commission and hosted by other major European film archives in Rome, Copenhagen, Prague, Paris. During the three day workshop, presentations to help organizations to implement EN 15744 and EN 15907 are alternated with practical demonstrations in which the participants can contribute in sharing their own experience and work. The conferences will be held in English with simultaneous Spanish translations. IVAC and ARIBSAN are collaborating for almost a year, to promote and stimulate the use of the ISAN identification system among the local audiovisual industry. Both parts of ISO 15706, the International Standard Audiovisual Number (ISAN), are referenced in EN 15744 and EN 15907 where ISAN is used as the preferred identifier to reference unambiguously cinematographic works, their variants and subsequent manifestations. Geneva, November 2011 – In recent years an increasing number of audiovisual Collecting Societies, including Procirep (France) and Egeda (Spain), have integrated the ISAN number in their processes to improve the Management of Audiovisual Rights. SIAE, the Italian Society of Authors and Editors, has recently implemented the ISAN number in its own process. The ISAN identifier is by now part of the SIAE requested audiovisual work information in registration form (modulo 117 Autori). The submission of this form is mandatory to register with SIAE all assimilated cinematographic works, including TV movie, TV series, documentaries, cartoon ect. SIAE manage this kind of protected works, as well as feature films, for which they collect and distribute royalties to right owners. SIAE carry out their activities both in Italy (through their offices) and abroad (through the foreign audiovisual authors’ societies with which they signed representation agreements). SIAE is also a member of IDA (International Documentation on Audiovisual Works), a CISAC database that uses the ISAN number within the automated data exchanges among Authors Societies worldwide.
Geneva, September 2011 - BAVP (Société de gestion collective des producteurs d’eouvres audiovisuelles belges) has submitted an Expression of Interest for implementing an ISAN Registration Agency in the coming months to serve the French speaking and the Dutch speaking audiovisual markets in Belgium. Geneva, August 2011 – Parking Lot (ISAN 0000-0002-DC5A-0000-Z-0000-0000-6), produced and directed by Francesco Gasperoni, is the first 3D Italian film to have received an ISAN code. Francesco Gasperoni declared: "I produce and direct 3D films because I believe in innovation, also I trust ISAN because it’s an innovative tool for our industry. ISAN is of great support to producers, it enables us to fully exploit a film within the distribution value chain, especially on the international marketplace. ISAN allows us to track our films even when the title is changed for the international distribution in different countries and that helps us to better control the revenues in Italy and all over the world".

Geneva, January 2010 - An ISAN code has been allocated to all films screened at the 45th Solothurn Film Festival, the most important event for Swiss film productions, which has started on the 21st of January and will go on till the 28th of January 2010. Every year the festival presents a representative selection of the current Swiss Films. The ISANs, assigned to each film, can be retrieved on the Festival Online Program where it is possible to get all the screenings.
Geneva, January 2010 - A new online ISAN Registration platform connected to the central ISAN Repository has been launched by Procirep (French Society for Producers of Cinema and Television) to provide the French producers a suitable tool to register their works within the ISAN French Agency. This platform, accessible by the web site www.france-isan.org and financed by the RIAM fund from CNC (French National Center of Cinematography) , has been developed within a Consortium among Procirep, ARP (French Society of Authors, Directors and Producers), SACD (French society of Dramatic Authors and Composers) and SCAM (Society of Multimedia Authors). Geneva, August 2009 - ISAN-IA (ISAN International Agency) is saddened by the passing of its good friend and colleague, Lawrence Safir, who died on August 5th, in a London hospital after a long illness. He was 62. Lawrence has served the ISAN Standard since its conception, being one of the main protagonists of the audiovisual industry who contributed to build up the ISAN Standard to establish a unique identification for audiovisual programs. Member of the ISAN-IA’s Board since its creation, during the last two years, he has also covered the position of President of the ISAN International Agency, bringing all his precious experience of the audiovisual market, acquired during his long and successful career.(More...)

Geneva, 12th March, 2009 – From March 2009, UK Film Council requires registered ISAN numbers to be provided as part of the delivery requirements for feature films receiving Lottery production funding. This will be extended to films receiving money from the Prints and Advertising Fund in late spring 2009, to coincide with the next update of the guidelines for that scheme.
Short films are not included in the requirement at this stage, but makers of short films may like to consider the advantages of ISAN registration, particularly if they plan to seek commercial or other distribution. (More)

Geneva, October 7, 2008 – ITV, one of the main private national broadcasters in Great Britain, is adopting ISAN for the content identification of all of its programs. This initiative, announced by ITV and ISAN UK, is in support of ITV’s digital strategy and will enable the tracking and monitoring of ITV content throughout the work across multimedia platforms. John Cresswell, ITV’s Chief Operating Officer, said: “the ability to exploit our content effectively is a key part of ITV’s strategy and using ISAN will enhance our ability to do this”. Max Graesser, ITV’s Director of Operations has also expressed his favor to this new collaboration with ISAN: “ITV is delighted to build this relationship with ISAN. It reflects our commitment to digital working and our intent to ensure a secure supply chain model”. As Patrick Attallah, ISAN-IA Managing Director, has said, ISAN adoption by ITV demonstrates the benefits of using ISAN for universal content identification and tracking. Geneva, 9th September, 2008 - ISAN : the content Identifier recommended by ATSC ISAN is the content identifier recommended by the Advanced Television System Committee (ATSC) in the updated approved standard A/57B, “Content Identification and Labeling for ATSC Transport”, published last May. ATSC states that when an ISAN is assigned to a broadcast audiovisual work, it should be used as the content identifier; the ATSC content identifier made of a house number can coexist with the ISAN. The ATSC content identifier alone should only be used when an ISAN is not available for that content.With this recommendation, ATSC aims to bring the method for content identification in line with those defined in MPEG-2 systems.ATSC is the Standard for Digital Broadcasting, replacing the analog NTSC system, adopted in USA, Canada and in many countries in Latin America such as Mexico, Honduras and Puerto Rico. Other Latin American countries such as Argentina are experimenting it. In Asia, ATSC has been adopted in some countries, among these South Korea. For these nations ATSC is going to be central for broadcasting as in the coming years, according to national laws, the broadcasting transmission have to pass to digital: USA is supposed to accomplish the switch off by February 17, 2009 and Canada by 31, August 2011 while South Korea by 31, December 2012. ATSC is an international, non-profit organization, developing voluntary standards for digital television. Formed in 1982 by the member organizations of the Joint Committee on InterSociety Coordination (JCIC) - the Electronic Industries Association (EIA), the Institute of Electrical and Electronic Engineers (IEEE), the National Association of Broadcasters (NAB), the National Cable Telecommunications Association (NCTA), and the Society of Motion Picture and Television Engineers (SMPTE) - it counts currently approximately 185 members representing the broadcast, broadcast equipment, motion picture, consumer electronics, computer, cable, satellite, and semiconductor industries.

ISAN Österreich (Austria), the newly appointed Registration Agency, intended to serve the Austrian market, has been founded by the two leading institutions of the Austrian film industry: AMPA (Audiovisuelle Medienproduzenten Austria), the society of producers of audiovisual media , which also have being running for more than 25 years the "VAM Verwertungsgesellschaft fuer audiovisuelle Medien", the collecting society in Austria , and the "Fachverband der Film- und Musikindustrie" , the association of the Austrian Film- and Music industry. Geneva, September 2, 2008 – ISAN to be soon officialized in China. ISAN and V-ISAN standards will be linked to the new Chinese national standard for identification codes to be used in online video contents. The Chinese Ministry of Culture has announced that as part of a move to combat online piracy and protect intellectual property rights, China will promulgate new National Standards for the identification of online contents which will be compliant with ISO Standards, such as ISAN and V-ISAN for audiovisual works as well as ISWC (the International Standard Musical Works Code) for music and ISTC (the International Standard Text Code) for texts. The National Technical Committee for the Standardization of Information and Documentation (NTCSID) is currently working these standards which will be sent to the Standardization Administration of China (SAC) – the Institution representing China to join ISO - for approval before November.

Geneva, December 1st, 2007 - ISAN UK, the local ISAN Registration Agency in the UK, has been officially launched today. ISAN UK appointed few months ago, has been founded by PACT (UK trade association representing independent feature film, television, animation and interactive media companies), MCPS-PRS Alliance (the not-for-profit UK collecting societies for composers, songwriters and publishers) and Soundmouse (an international online programme metadata platform which connects broadcasters, production companies and distributors). Clive Bishop, the newly appointed General Manager of ISAN UK, is and expert in media, and has more than 20 years of experience in the entertainment industry. 'Using effective identification and metadata tag, like ISAN, in the UK, can only increase the level of content identification and protection', said Patrick Attallah, chief executive officer and managing director of ISAN International Agency. Geneva, November 23rd, 2007 - The Arab Cinema Directory, soon will be delivering ISANs.
ISAN-IA and the Arab Cinema Directory are currently working on a collaboration to make the delivery of ISANs directly through the Arab Cinema Directory (www.acdir.net). This cinema database, is part of the Medscreen project, which was created with the support of the European Union, within the framework of the EUROMED audiovisual project to support and promote Arab – Mediterranean cinema productions. Falafel, the 2006 Lebanese film directed by Michel Kammoun, is the first film from the Arab Cinema Directory to have received an ISAN. “ISAN is a passport for films, an ID, a fingerprint” commented Michel Kammoun, the Lebanese director. After having realized some shorts, Falafel is the first feature film made by Kammoun , which tells the story of Toufic, a young Lebanese man, and his nocturnal rides. Between his family, friends and love affairs, Toufic tries to seize every day of his existence. Each second is the most important. Soon he discovers that having a normal life in this country is a luxury out of his reach. Fifteen years after the war has ended, a volcano lies on every street corner, like a ticking bomb that is ready to explode. Falafel, which has already won many prizes in international festivals such as Namur, Lille, Dubai, Rotterdam, Alexandria and Valencia has been registered also in the Arab Cinema Directory. “We are very proud to expand our database to the new cinema works produced in the Arab – Mediterranean countries. Falafel is a great successful film that we could help in getting an ISAN” said Patrick Attallah, ISAN-IA chief executive officer.
Geneva, November 15th, 2007 - ISAN to be a reference ID for the identification of protected content on Dailymotion.
Within the agreement that has been recently signed between USPA (French TV Producers’ union) and Dailymotion, one of the main worldwide web user generated content site for video sharing (and the leader on the French market), ISAN has been designated as reference ID to be used for the identification of copyright protected audiovisual content produced by USPA members. According to this agreement, ISAN will be used in connection with the fingerprint technologies put in place by Dailymotion in order to control audiovisual content posted on the video sharing platform. It also stipulates that USPA members entering into licensing agreements with the French video sharing web site company will share with the latest the advertising profits coming from the distribution of videos on this platform. Dailymotion shows a clear will to fight piracy and abide to copyright. “This partnership shows the will of the audio-visual producers to seize the new windows of exposure which Internet and the video platforms like Dailymotion offer” say Simone Halberstadt-Harari, USPA chairman and Jacques Peskine, USPA General Delegate and Chairman of the ISAN French Registration Agency.

Singapore Content Protection Centre, is a Motion Picture Association (MPA) Asia Pacific initiative, in partnership with the Media Development Authority of Singapore. The ISAN International Agency (ISAN-IA) is pleased to announce the appointment of ISAN PL, the Polish ISAN Registration Agency, a division of SFP-ZAPA the Association of Polish Filmmakers. SFP is one of the most active organization supporting and protecting films and their authors. It exists since 1966, and counts over 1200 members whose professions is to work in Polish cinematography and television from directors, producers, cinematographers, to animators, screenwriters, film critics, stuntmen, make-up artists and sound editors. The association actively participates in the elaboration of the law on cinematography, in the organization of the most important Polish film festivals and runs ZAPA (Union of Audiovisual Authors and Producers) a separate organization for the collective management of copyrights. IFTA ISAN RA is a division of the Los Angeles (USA) based association IFTA (Independent Film & TV Alliance), a non-profit association whose mission is to provide the independent film and television industry with high quality marketplace-oriented services and worldwide representation. IFTA first members were a group of distributors and sales agents whose main goal was to expand the independent film business by creating a world-class trade show, the American Film Market (AFM).
